Thank you! SWBOCES Board of Education members recognized for their service

Members of the Southern Westchester BOCES Board of Education were honored by students, teachers, staff and administrators for their service to the district on the occasion of School Boards Recognition Week, Oct. 17-21.

At its meeting of Oct. 19, board members heard directly from teachers whose students crafted various tokens of appreciation through instructional projects.

Music Teacher Andrew Ruoti's students performed Bruno Mars's "Count On Me" for a video presentation that was screened at the start of the meeting. (Find more about the music program here.Students in Tappan Hill School Teacher Erroll Rivera’s class worked with volunteers from the RISE program of Volunteer New York! to create floral arrangements and hand-decorated vases for each Board member. Culinary Arts students at the Center for Career Services baked and decorated individual cakes for each board member. Meanwhile, 3-D-printed name plates designed and produced by Teacher Mitch Cohen's students were also presented to the Board.

Mr. Ruoti and Mr. Cohen, both teachers in the Center for Special Services at Southern Westchester BOCES, addressed the board and expressed  their thanks and that of their students. They also described how their projects were developed within their curriculum and how students' creativity was integral to each process.

Echoing the leadership of the New York State School Boards Association, board of education members statewide are recognized during this time for their faithful service and leadership.

“These men and women devote countless hours to ensuring that our schools help every child to learn and excel,” District Superintendent Dr. Harold A. Coles said. “They routinely make tough decisions and dedicate their time to studying issues and education regulations to provide the accountability our community expects.”

The key work of school boards is to support a welcoming and affirming learning environment for all students, Dr. Coles said, one rich with educational opportunities that will awaken their passions and interests and prepare them for their future careers and civic responsibilities.

The Southern Westchester BOCES Board of Education members are: President John A. Filiberti, Vice President Robert Johnson, and members Sheryl Brady, Lynn Frazer-McBride, Nilesh Jain, Eileen Miller, and Joan Weber.  Each member received a framed certificate of appreciation.

Being a board member is selfless, and we appreciate it," Dr. Brendan Lyons, Deputy Superintendent/COO, said. "Being a BOCES board member is an extension of that selflessness because it’s extending yourself out beyond your own community to give even more of your time.
