SWBOCES Board Member elected to NYSSBA governing body

Sheryl Brady chosen by region’s school boards to represent Westchester, Rockland and Putnam

Sheryl BradySouthern Westchester BOCES Board of Education member Sheryl Brady has been elected to the Board of Directors of the New York State School Boards Association for Area 10, representing Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.

Dr. Brady has been a member of the Southern Westchester BOCES Board of Education since 2019 and serves on its Policy and Finance/Audit subcommittees. She is a longtime member of the White Plains Board of Education.

The NYSSBA Board of Directors promotes the interest of education throughout the state, determines general policies, appoints NYSSBA’s executive director and adopts an annual budget. Each Director is an active school board member and must be nominated by the member school boards of their designated geographic area. Directors serve a two-year term.

“I consider my Board service to be the most significant work that I do. I am eager to begin this work to represent the school districts of Area 10, promoting their needs, perspectives, and priorities as an advocate for our region as well as keeping our component school districts apprised of what is happening at NYSSBA and in education around the state. I look forward to this opportunity to influence statewide education initiatives and policy on behalf of the Rockland/Westchester/Putnam region and the Westchester Putnam and Rockland School Boards Associations. Public education has been and continues to be my passion, which is what propelled me to run for the White Plains School Board more than 15 years ago and the Southern Westchester BOCES Board more than three years ago.  I relish the prospect now to be an effective voice in a larger arena, articulating and advancing the agenda of the school districts in Area 10,” she stated.

Dr. Brady is the Manager of Operations at Bennett International, an educational consultancy company; in addition, she teaches Religious School and was a member of the Board of Trustees at Congregation Kol Ami. Previously, Ms. Brady was an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Department Chair at Purchase College, SUNY. She holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Cornell University where she was a Danforth Fellow.

“On behalf of the Southern Westchester BOCES Board of Education, I congratulate our colleague, Sheryl Brady, on her election to the NYSSBA Board of Directors. The work that NYSSBA does on behalf of students and school districts across the state is vitally important. It is a reflection of Sheryl’s hard work and dedication that she will serve in this role. We are proud and excited to have her represent our BOCES and our region,” said SWBOCES Board President John Filiberti.

“This is an honor for our BOCES for one of our own board members to represent the larger region in this important way. It is also an exciting opportunity for Dr. Brady to have a positive influence on NYSSBA policy and leadership. I’m confident she will make great contributions to the NYSSBA Board of Directors and will ably serve the interests of the Area 10 region,” said Southern Westchester BOCES District Superintendent, Dr. Harold A. Coles.

The NYSSBA Board of Directors consists of a president, two vice presidents, a treasurer, the immediate past president and one director from each of the Association’s 13 geographic areas. There are also representatives of the Conference of Big 5 School Districts and the Caucus of Black School Board Members. Officers are nominated by the Board of Directors and elected at NYSSBA’s Annual Business Meeting in October.
