Kathryn Meyers is bringing more than a decade of experience in special education and instructional leadership to her new role as assistant principal at Rochambeau School.

Ms. Meyers spent 11 years as a special education teacher and instructional coach in District 10 in the Bronx. As she considered her next step, she was drawn to Southern Westchester BOCES and the opportunity to support students with disabilities on a broader scale.

“I was ready to take that leadership role,” Meyers said. “Since I was working with special education students, I think I wasn’t tapping fully into the potential and the knowledge of the special education population as a whole. So that drew me to BOCES.”

A Rockland County native, Meyers earned degrees in childhood education and special education from St. Thomas Aquinas College, followed by a master’s degree in literacy from SUNY New Paltz and her school building leader certification from Molloy University.

She is excited about the opportunity to make an impact across an entire school community.

“I like making more of an impact within a whole building,” she said. “As a teacher, it’s predominantly your classroom that you’re affecting. And when you’re an instructional coach you have certain classrooms and certain teachers that you’re affecting. I think as a leader, then you’re affecting a whole building, systems and structures, different teachers, different staff members.”

Arriving a few weeks before the start of school, Ms. Meyers has had the opportunity to walk the halls of Rochambeau and begin getting to know her new colleagues.

“I’m just ready for the kids to get here and to meet the teachers too,” she said. “I’m slowly meeting people, but BOCES is bigger than I expected.”

Ms. Meyers sees a natural connection between her special education background and the student population in her new school community.

Outside of work, Meyers enjoys spending time with friends and family. She also has an exciting personal milestone ahead: She will be getting married on New Year’s Eve.

For now, though, she is eager to begin the school year, get to know her students and staff, and become part of the Southern Westchester BOCES community.
