Interns gain valuable experience while giving back to their communities
The Lower Hudson Regional Information Center welcomed 44 interns from 14 high schools and 13 colleges this summer who’ll gain technical and professional experience working alongside the region’s leaders in educational technology.
The summer internship program, in its 27th year, places students in technology support positions at the LHRIC and in school districts in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties.
Interns gain experience while providing staff support at a critical time of year. Such tasks as taking inventory of devices, decommissioning old equipment, launching technology initiatives, and making system repairs and improvements all need to be completed before classes resume.
The program is provided as a cooperative service to districts and allows interns to support ed tech initiatives while gaining valuable work experience. Annual cohorts routinely top 40 interns. The LHRIC handles recruiting, hiring, payroll and routine check-ins on behalf of districts.
There are high expectations for the work environment districts provide and the duties they assign. That contributes to a high number of interns returning each year. Many have gone on to work for the LHRIC or local districts.
“We are happy to provide a robust internship program with its many benefits both for the interns and our districts,” said LHRIC Executive Director Dr. Ellen J. McDonnell. “The program continues to grow and receive positive feedback from our district partners. That’s a credit to the high standards we set for our interns, the program, and ourselves.”
