students and teachers at Black History Month Celebration

February is Black History Month, an opportunity to celebrate the achievements, culture, and contributions of Black people to history and society. It is also a time for meaningful instructional opportunities in our classrooms.

Black History Month graphicOur Transfiguration School students and staff (pictured above) kicked things off Jan. 30 with Dare to Dream: Studies of MLK and Black History Month. Visual displays were coordinated by Transfiguration's Connected Learning team. Each classroom selected a historical figure and created a ‘window’ display in the main hallway. Students and staff engaged in a gallery walk to learn about different individuals who have made an impact on our world. “What a wonderful way for our community to learn about historical figures that have made an impact," Principal Francesca Fernandez said. "I hope that this activity encourages students to dream and learn about the our history."
