    Software Spotlight: Explore Learning- Gizmos

    Gizmos are online simulations for math and science topics, grades 3-12. When students engage with simulations, they use their spatial reasoning to learn fundamental concepts, and are encouraged to explore and experiment and build conceptual understanding. Gizmos lend themselves to group work, independent work, and whole class instruction. This session will provide a fresh look at the Gizmos library of content and correlations to textbooks and standards. We'll also brainstorm ways to effectively incorporate Gizmos into daily classroom routines. All participants will receive a Zoom invite prior to the session.

If you previously used Ensemble to capture and/or host video, we've designed this one -hour "basic training” session to focus on the fundamentals of creating, uploading, sharing and editing videos and playlists.     English Language Learners are tasked with demonstrating competence in a new language. One of the most challenging modality for ELLs in writing.

    In this PD Short, participants will explore specific strategies to ensure ELLs can produce writing that aligns with course expectations as well as writing that is required for the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT).

    Software Spotlight: Flocabulary

    Flocabulary is a learning program for all grades that uses educational hip-hop music to engage students and increase achievement across the curriculum. Teachers at 20,000 schools use Flocabulary's standards-based videos, instructional activities and student creativity tools to supplement instruction and develop core literacy skills. This program prides itself on incorporating vocabulary into every lesson to build academic vocabulary in every subject. Other features include Text-to-speech, peer discussion prompts and slower speeds to support ELLs. Participants will receive a Zoom link prior to the session.

    Nonviolent Crisis Intervention Initial Certification Training

    Managing aggressive and violent behavior has become an essential skill relevant to all school personnel. Staff members need safe, effective behavior management training designed to maintain the care, welfare, safety and security of all involved in a crisis. Teachers and support staff will explore a range of "risk behaviors" and practice appropriate de-escalation strategies to address these behaviors while maintaining the best possible professional attitude. You must attend all session. In addition, we are asking that individuals attend in pairs or trios so that they can perform the physical interventions with a partner. All participants must complete the physical interventions in order to receive certification. If you have further questions regarding the course, please contact Brandon Cruz via email at bcruz@swboces.org.

    Fee:
    $425 per participant for CoSer 555 members
    $495 per participant for all others

    The registration fee will apply unless cancellation is made one week prior to the workshop date.

  • SWBOCES to celebrate 75 years

    Southern Westchester BOCES will commemorate 75 years of supporting the work of local schools with a reception prior to its Annual Meeting on April 12, 2023. 

    The celebration will take place at the Career Services campus, 65 Grasslands Road in Valhalla. The 5:30 reception will feature food service by the campus's Culinary Arts program.

    Southern Westchester BOCES was among the original Boards of Cooperative Educational Services chartered in 1948 by the state and by local school boards. Established in by the State University of New York following a June 15, 1948, meeting of school directors, board members and trustees in White Plains, the entity then known as BOCES II, first met the following September. 

    Today we offer hundreds of cooperative, cost-efficient services to school districts in the region, encompassing 187 different schools, 104,000 students, and more than 650,000 adults who live and work here. Our Centers provide more than 70 services to help school districts, teaching and administrative professionals, students, and the public with needs in the areas of special education, career and technical education, transportation, interscholastic athletics, adult and community services, technology, and professional learning.

  • Second in a series of workshops supports the work of Teacher Aides

    Rye Lake MS/HS hosts teacher aide training on fostering student independence

    Fostering student independence is a critical skill that all teacher aides should have in their toolbox. It enables them to support students with special needs in developing the necessary life skills to thrive in the classroom and beyond.

    As such, SWBOCES Center for Professional Learning & Curriculum Support recently continued their training series with a session on Fostering Student Independence at the Rye Lake campus.

    "The ultimate goal is to help students develop the skills they need to become independent and successful adults," said Elizabeth DellaBadia, Supervisor of Teaching, Learning, and Student Support in Southern Westchester BOCES' Center for Professional Learning & Curriculum Support. "By fostering their independence in the classroom, we are setting them up for success in the real world."

  • EMS students eager to represent SWBOCES CTE programs at expo in Albany

    Gianluca Queirolo and Michael Pereira are among a contingent of students and educators who will represent Southern Westchester BOCES' Career and Technical Education programs at the state capitol March 14.

    BOCES Expo 2023 will showcase CTE programs from BOCES across New York State at the base of the great stairwell of the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

    Gianluca and Michael, along with two classmates in the Emergency Medical Services program, will join teacher Robert Del Greco in presenting an EMS demonstration for event visitors.

    "We plan on presenting the basics of EMS," Gianluca said.  "We also look forward to seeing other programs from around the state."

    "Southern Westchester BOCES' EMS program is one of the best programs," said Michael.

    He and Gianluca are both Sleepy Hollow High School students and certified first responders in the Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow fire departments and ambulance corps, respectively.  Besides the real-world training they are able to apply in their volunteer responder roles, they both have the opportunity to earn up to seven college credits while in the program. 

    The pair credited their instructor and teaching assistants for the quality of the program. "They know their stuff," Michael said.

  • White Plains Library once again showcases CTE students' artwork

    Downtown White Plains exhibit has become an annual tradition for SWBOCES art students

    Anyone visiting the White Plains Public Library this month is in for a special treat. On display in the library’s art gallery are works by students in teacher Damian Powers’ Commercial Art classes. This is the third annual exhibit in which Mr. Powers's students have participated. This year, he noted, his students outdid themselves. “It’s exceptional,” Mr. Powers said. "They are just super-talented students.”

    Section One basketball returns to the Westchester County Center

    Representatives of the Section One Executive Committee and the SWBOCES Office of Interscholastic Athletics were on hand as County Executive George Latimer announced the return of Section One Basketball Championships to the Westchester County Center. The games got under way this week.

    Annual event lets legislators to hear directly from students about the difference BOCES makes

    SWBOCES Career Tech students Ariel Novominski and John Cross took a whirlwind tour of the New York State Capitol and Legislative offices during BOCES Advocacy Day yesterday, meeting lawmakers and sharing their stories of the positive impact BOCES programs have made for them.  Senators and members of the Assembly were gracious with their time and attention, expressing support for the vital work that BOCES does every day.

    Students from a range of Southern Westchester BOCES Career Services programs excelled at the SkillsUSA Regional competition Feb. 11 at Orange-Ulster BOCES.

    "Our students continue to excel and make us proud when matched up against their peers from across the region and statewide," Teacher and SkillsUSA Advisor Ray Sulla said.
