Tournament promotes teamwork on the court, positive behavior off it
The gymnasium at Rye Lake MS/HS was transformed into a high-energy arena on Friday, May 1, as students gathered for an exciting basketball event hosted by Team Leader Curtis Anderson. With the atmosphere buzzing, the event gave students a chance to experience competition, teamwork, and school spirit in a way that felt larger than life.
The event featured a 3-point shootout alongside a competitive 3v3 basketball tournament, where students showcased their skills and determination on the court. Staff and students filled chairs placed directly on the gym floor, creating an up-close audience experience that made the games feel intense and personal—like sitting court-side at an NCAA or NBA game.
To ensure fair play and structure, a referee was present to officiate the games, while a water station was available to keep players refreshed and ready to compete. Every detail contributed to a well-organized and engaging event.
Participation was made even more meaningful through the use of PBIS points, which were used to distribute event tickets. This system (Positive Behavior Intervention Supports) not only encouraged positive behavior but also gave students a sense of earning their place at the event—adding to the excitement and value of the experience.
Beyond the competition, the event served a deeper purpose. Students actively learned about sportsmanship and what it takes to be part of a team. The supportive environment and enthusiastic crowd helped build confidence and camaraderie among participants.
By the end of the event, it was clear this wasn’t just a school activity but an experience. Many students shared that they felt like they were playing in Madison Square Garden, capturing the electric energy and unforgettable atmosphere of the day.
The basketball event proved to be a powerful blend of fun, learning, and community—one that students will remember long after the final shot was taken.
