Ronald L. Smalls
Ronald L. Smalls is the district superintendent and chief executive
officer at Southern Westchester BOCES, heading up an educational
organization that employs 1,200 teachers, administrators, and
other professionals. SWBOCES provides more than 65 educational
programs and services to students, teachers, administrators,
and the general public in career and technical education, special
education, adult education, and professional development for
teachers. It serves 33 component school districts in the southern
Westchester County region and operates with a budget of $112
million. Mr. Smalls also serves as New York State Education Commissioner
Richard Mills' representative in the southern Westchester region,
and as a liaison between local school districts and the State
Education Department. Previously, Mr. Smalls served for six years
as superintendent of schools for the Hawthorne Cedar Knolls Union
Free School District. He was also employed for eight years as
Supervisor of Special Education for Nassau County BOCES in Westbury,
L.I. He has more than 32 years of experience as a teacher and
an administrator, including three years as head basketball coach
at Long Island University, where he also served as Director of
Student Teaching. Mr. Smalls earned bachelor’s and master’s
degrees from Long Island University, a master’s degree
from Pace University, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in
educational administration at Columbia Teachers College.
