District Superintendent Ronald Smalls Announces His Departure

SWBOCES District Superintendent Ronald Smalls has announced that he will leave SWBOCES after the new year to head up the Greenburgh Central School District No. 7. The Greenburgh Central 7 School Board also announced Mr. Smalls' appointment last week.

Having served as SWBOCES District Superintendent for the past 5 ½ years, Mr. Smalls will join Greenburgh Central 7 on Jan. 2, 2008.

In a letter distributed to SWBOCES employees on Friday, Dec. 7, Mr. Smalls said, "I have enjoyed being affiliated with such a dedicated group of educators and support staff and appreciate all of the collaboration, cooperation and support you have given me during the past 5 ½ years - we have accomplished much."

"I will truly miss all of the members of the Southern Westchester BOCES family," he wrote.

Before joining BOCES in 2002, Mr. Smalls was Superintendent of Schools for the Hawthorne-Cedar Knolls School District from 1996-2002. He also was Regional Supervisor for Special Education at Nassau BOCES, Principal of the Community School in Wantagh, NY, and Assistant Principal of the Baldwin Harbor Park School in Baldwin, NY.

Mr. Smalls is replacing the previous superintendent, Josephine Moffett, who retired last July. Since August, Dr. Sidney Freund has served as Interim Superintendent in Greenburgh.

Greenburgh Central 7 Board of Education President Lloyd Newland said, "We are very pleased that someone with the experience of Ron Smalls was excited about the opportunity to provide educational leadership for our community. Having worked at BOCES, he knows our District and is very optimistic about our capacity to do great things for the students. He also has wonderful relationships in Albany with the legislature and the State Education Department. This can only help our District's efforts to provide quality programs and opportunities for our children."

SWBOCES Board of Education President John DeSantis said that the next step for BOCES will be to await the appointment of an Interim District Superintendent, which will be made by state Education Commissioner Richard Mills. In the meantime, the Board has already established a subcommittee to collect information on search firms to assist in the process of replacing Mr. Smalls.

The Board of Education hopes to receive recommendations, possibly as early as Dec. 19, for firms that could conduct the search. Any firm that is appointed, he said, will seek the input of BOCES staff, administrators and the Board. During this interim period, Deputy District Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Hansen will handle BOCES day-to-day administrative responsibilities.
