Teachers Try Out New Regents Exam
Science teachers from a number of local school districts had the opportunity to attend a special training session held by Southern Westchester BOCES on administering the revised 2008 Regents Physical Setting/Earth Science Performance Test Part D.
The full-day training session was sponsored by the BOCES Center for Professional Development and Curriculum Support.
The standardized test is given to students in June, August and January. The examination, which consists of a laboratory component and a written test, is based on the earth science core curriculum, established by the New York State Learning Standards for mathematics, science and technology.
The new version of the test, which has been several years in the making, consists of four stations. At each station, explained Barbara Wallis, associate in instructional services for the state Education Department, students are given nine minutes to complete a performance task plus additional time to move between stations. Topics include rocks/minerals, mass/density, epicenters, and elliptical orbits.
The teachers who attended this session and seven others across the state will serve as turnkey trainers for earth science teachers in their respective regions. Additional training sessions were offered by BOCES on Nov. 19 and 20 and will be offered again on Jan. 3.
“This was an excellent one-day training model,” said Rosemary Lee, BOCES Supervisor of Professional Development for Sciences. “The teachers were enthusiastic and eager to receive the training, which has long been anticipated.”
