Scott Nelson, the popular, self-effacing automotive technology
teacher at the Center for Career Services, was honored in April
by the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association with the
group's Outstanding Educator for Westchester County award.
Mr. Nelson, who's been with SWBOCES for seven years, was honored
for his "dedication, delivery of content, and work on building
a strong program" for automotive students, according to Stephen
Mercaldo, educational advisor for the GNYADA. The award was announced
at the New York Auto Show at the Jacob Javits Center in New York.
Mr. Mercaldo, New York downstate manager for the Automotive Youth
Educational Systems (AYES) program, also noted that Mr. Nelson
has maintained an active partnership with AYES, a national program
that encourages young people to enter the automotive industry.
The SWBOCES teacher has also served on the revision team for the
New York Association of Administrators for Career and Technical
Education, and is currently participating in a Pennsylvania State
University study of the application of required math skills in
an automotive program setting.
Mr. Nelson said that receiving the award was a humbling experience. "I
was completely surprised by this," he said, "and I appreciate the
recognition for my work."
