Director Dennis Delborgo and Program Specialist Matthew Kavaler provided a tour Friday of the Westchester County Emergency Operations Center in Hawthorne to Southern Westchester BOCES School Safety and Facilities Supervisor Brandon A. Cruz.
Cruz, who joined SWBOCES at the start of the current school year, has been reaching out to schools, municipalities and agencies, building a collaborative network region-wide and communicating about SWBOCES’ role as a regional partner in safety and emergency planning. Visiting the Emergency Operations Center was a natural part of that effort. The facility is a central command and communications location for coordinating region-wide emergency response efforts.
It is operated by the Office of Emergency Management, which is responsible for coordinating the county's response to requests for emergency disaster assistance from municipalities, including support to local incident commanders during emergencies; use of the EOC during a large-scale disaster; and as a conduit for state and federal emergency support. OEM works daily with local, state, federal and private sector partners to plan large-scale, multi-jurisdictional emergency response efforts.
Formulating emergency response plans with regard to the Indian Point nuclear plants is one focus. The EOC was put to extensive use during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
