Pocantico Rallies Against Bullying
SWBOCES Pocantico Students Create Bully-Free Zone
Children Learn How to Prevent Bullying During Awareness Month
October was National Bullying Awareness Month. As a part of a continued effort to provide awareness about bullying, SWBOCES students at Pocantico Hills implemented a month of bully-free activities. Topics included: “What is Bullying?” “Bullying is Never Okay,” “Spread Kindness Week,” and “GPS,” or “Good Personal Space.”
Students learned what bullying is and the types to identify. They also learned the difference between bullying and a disagreement. By teaching students how to properly handle bullying, they learn the importance of bullying prevention and that they can always turn to trusted adults and even classmates for help and support.
Bullying Prevention Month also gave students the opportunity to participate in creating positive messages and being kind to one another. They learned the difference between “cotton words” and “sandpaper words.” Students also focused on what personal space is the amount of space people need to have between themselves so that they feel comfortable. To show we all support a Bully Free Zone, all students and staff wore blue every Monday in October.
