Lesson 1: Maintaining Good Health

 

NYS Learning Standards:

As speakers and writers, students will use oral and written language to present, from a variety of perspectives, their opinions and judgments on experiences, ideas, information and issues.

Objectives:

  • To identify healthy lifestyle habits

  • To create lists of good/poor food choices

  • To articulate the effects of good/poor lifestyle choices on health

  • To write in a journal re: healthy daily choices for food and exercise

Suggested Topics

  • Specific diets for weight control, optimum health and/or specific conditions such as diabetes or pregnancy
  • Effects of cigarettes and alcohol on health
  • Doctor and dental visits
  • Exercise

Suggested Activities

  • Bring food labels to class for analysis
  • Create a meal plan/grocery list for one week
  • Analyze fast food items for nutritional content
  • Create English vocabulary lists to assist with doctor/dentist visits
  • Develop exercise plans for various life styles
