Lesson 1: Jobs and Occupations

 

NYS Learning Standards:

Students will be knowledgeable about the world of work, explore career options, and relate personal skills, aptitudes and abilities to career decisions.

Objectives:

  • To speak, read and write about employment goals

  • To express feelings about present employment

  • To explain present job skills and responsibilities to others

  • To write a resume

Suggested Topics

  • Local employers, their missions and opportunities
  • Present jobs vs. future goals
  • Feelings about present work
  • Discussion of job categories (office, construction trades, medical, etc.)

Suggested Activities

  • Research career opportunities on Web via accessing local classified ads
  • Pairs/groups of students will deconstruct a targeted company, listing all likely job titles and the necessary skills for each. Groups will present to the class
  • Write a resume
  • Conduct mock interviews
  • Keep a journal of job search activities/results
  • Follow-up interviews with thank you note
