Lesson 1: The Significance of Black History Month

 

NYS Learning Standards:

Students will use the English language for effective communication with a wide variety of people. They will enrich their understanding of people and their views.

Objectives:

  • To understand the meaning and significance of Black History Month

  • To compile a list of prominent African-Americans and their contributions to American Society

  • To gain a greater understanding of the rich mixture of U.S. culture

Suggested Topics

  • The importance of civil rights to American culture
  • African-American impact on American culture (literature, architecture, music, sports, etc.)

Suggested Activities

  • Obtain new vocabulary
  • Research the lives and contributions of African American’s in several areas such as social justice, art culture
  • Use newspaper, television and media for current references
  • Write to explain factual information in an article or caption
  • Read about local activities and discuss why each is significant
