HOMELESS STUDENT PROGRAM
The Southern Westchester Board of Cooperative Educational Services
(BOCES), Department of Social Services, and Urban League of Westchester
have pooled their resources to create the "Homeless Student Program."
Important features include:
- Advocacy for student's educational rights
- Database identification and attendance tracking
- Needs assessments to determine problems
- Acting as liaisons and providing technical assistance to schools
and shelters
- Supervision of after-school programs in shelters
- Staff development
- Reading and math tutorial programs and remedial intervention
- Co-chairing with the Westchester-Putnam School Boards Association
of the Homeless Student Collaborative
- Summer Literacy Program
Fall Programs:
After School Literacy and Math Lab will take place
at the Westhab Family Shelter, 290 Tarrytown Road, Elmsford,
NY l0523 and the Coachman Family Center, 123 East Post Road,
White Plains, NY l0601.
The Lee F. Jackson Model has been a successful intensive
school based case management model at the Greenburgh Central
School District #7 for the past four years. Last year we expanded
the model to include Highview School in Greenburgh Central
School District and George Washington school in the White
Plains School District. Beginning this fall we hope to include
other White Plains Schools and the Peekskill Middle School.
The Homeless Student Program After School Network Trainings
will take place the second Thursday of each month.
The series will begin with; "Characteristics and Strategies
of an Effective Youth Worker" presented by W. Lisa Ginsburg,
Director of Ramapo Resource and Training Center. An updated list
will appear soon on the website.
Summer Program
The Summer Literacy Program was successfully implemented at the
Coachman Family Center, Westhab Family Center, Westhab Vernon Plaza,
and Westhelp Mount Vernon. Approximately 60 children, ranging in
age from 6-12 years were involved with our programs.
