What Works in Schools and Classrooms!

Dr. Robert Marzano has spent virtually his entire career closely
examining the teaching/learning process. His most recent work
synthesizes over 35 years of research, which provides clear and
powerful insights into the nature of schooling. According to Marzano,
this research delivers exceptionally straightforward guidance
as to the steps schools can take to be highly effective in enhancing
student achievement. He has organized the research into
three broad categories - school-level factors, teacher-level factors,
and student-level factors - and he offers a simple premise that
schools can have a tremendous impact on student achievement
if they follow the direction provided by the research.
Among the significant findings are the following:
- Schools that are highly effective produce results that almost
entirely overcome the effects of student background.
- Any school in the United States can operate at advanced levels
of effectiveness if it is willing to implement what is known
about effective schooling.
- The average student who attends a "good" school will score
23 percentile points higher than the average student who attends
a "poor" school.
- The most important factor affecting student learning is the
teacher.
- More can be done to improve education by improving the effectiveness
of teachers than by any other single factor.
- Effective teachers appear to be effective with students of all
achievement levels, regardless of the level of
heterogeneity in their classrooms.
- The individual teacher can have a powerful effect on the
achievement of his/her students even if the school does not.
Individual schools, schools districts, even entire states are now
working with Dr. Marzano to implement the results of his findings.
Take advantage of this opportunity to spend a day with Dr. Robert
Marzano to learn more about the information offered from 35 years
of research. By attending this program, you will better understand
his belief that, if educators follow the guidance from research, we
can enter an era of unprecedented effectiveness, one in which the
vast majority of schools can be highly effective in promoting student
learning.
