NATIONAL SPEAKERS Susan Zimmerman, co-author of Mosaic of Thought and author of 7 Keys to Comprehension will present 7 Keys to Comprehension in Grades K-3.
Joanne Monroe, co-author of Supporting Struggling Readers and Writers will present Teaching Comprehension Strategies to Support Struggling Readers in Grades 4-12.
Mini-Institutes, Workshops and Presentations Led by Professional Developers, Curriculum Specialists, and Teachers
In addition to our national speakers, Maxine LaRaus, a consultant whose specialty is literacy and ELL students, will present a mini-institute on the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), a researched-based model of sheltered instruction. Maxine will present an overview of how teachers can implement the SIOP to teach content to English Language Learners while providing opportunities for them to become more academically proficient in English. Complementing our keynote presentations and mini-institute, teachers from primary, intermediate, middle school, and high school will conduct breakout sessions. The teachers will represent our partner districts, as well as other districts in the county. Topics may include balanced reading and writing, text interaction, guided reading, best literature, creative and standards-based writing, differentiation, and strategies for reading and writing in the content areas. Both new and experienced teachers will benefit from this Institute.
