Electrical Construction

Students interested in hands-on learning will find the Electrical Program both educational and challenging. While much of the curriculum focuses on the technical aspects of electrical construction, students must also learn the safe and proper use of electrical tools, equipment, machines and materials. Instructors cover a wide variety of topics during this two-year program, which includes wiring methods and materials, blueprint reading, meter reading, cable installation and circuitry concepts. Students have the opportunity to put their newfound knowledge to the test by completing practical assignments in class, such as installing lighting fixtures, wiring circuits, and trouble shooting, using the National Electrical Code as their guide. Career opportunities are also discussed, in addition to the training and additional qualifications needed for advancement.

The Electrical Construction Program, which follows the National Center for Construction and Research curriculum, integrates New York State English Language Arts and Math/Science/ Technology standards by frequently assigning projects that require students to interpret information and enhance their reading and writing skills. Oral communication skills are also developed, as students must explain the processes involved in electrical installation. Upon completion, students can continue their education at a two- or four-year college, or at a technical institution. Many are encouraged to enter the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers’ Electrical Apprentice Program.
