Cosmetology

The SWBOCES Cosmetology Program, one of the few such programs offered at the secondary level in the New York region, provides students with hands-on experience in a simulated salon located on the SWBOCES campus. The two-year program provides 1,000 hours of instruction that will qualify students to take the New York State Cosmetology Board Examination. The curriculum covers all aspects of the cosmetology field, including haircutting, hairstyling, hair color, waving and relaxing, skin care, makeup, manicures, pedicures, and shop management. Students compile and maintain a portfolio, and in their second year focus on practicing for the state exam and completing a required Senior Salon Project.

Student progress in the Cosmetology Program is measured using written and practical exams, styling contests, research papers, and the Senior Salon Project.

As required by the New York State Education Department, the Cosmetology Program integrates English Language Arts and Science/Technology standards into the curriculum by requiring students to read trade journals, conduct Internet-based research, complete book projects and maintain a portfolio.
