For students who enjoy repairing computers and are interested in the components of computer systems, this course is especially beneficial. Topics include computer assembly; troubleshooting and repair; upgrading and networking computer systems; network wiring and hardware; the Internet; and LAN, WAN and the Intranet. During the first year, students are introduced to the tools and equipment used in the repair of computers and how to remove and install computer components, in addition to installing and setting up operating systems. Other topics covered during the first year include computer memory, understanding file systems and the importance of multimedia devices. In the second year, students learn more about networking and are required to build their own in-house network. The skills acquired in class also prepare students to take the Cisco Certified Network Associate examination and to receive Microsoft Certified Software Engineer certification.
Written and oral exams and evaluations are used to test students’ knowledge and to integrate the New York State Education Department’s English Language Arts and Math/Science/Technology standards. Troubleshooting and communication skills are enhanced as students locate problems, learn to identify computer devices and systems, and explain how they are used.
