Commercial Art

The SWBOCES Commercial Art Program covers a wide range of topics, including drawing and illustration; graphic design, using applications like PhotoShop, Illustrator and QuarkXpress; and measurement and portfolio development. Throughout the year, students must submit for evaluation samples of their work in such areas as copy writing, digital drawings, and product design. These projects give students the opportunity to apply their skills to specific art-related projects and professions, and to familiarize themselves with the technological tools and materials used by professionals in the field. Students also learn about art-related careers, job descriptions and responsibilities. This course also focuses on the communication skills necessary to be successful in the commercial art field. Because of the competitive nature of the business, students are encouraged to continue their education at a two- or four-year college or art school.

The SWBOCES Commercial Art Program, which is recognized by major art schools throughout the United States, integrates New York State English Language Arts, math, science, and technology standards and supports Regents graduation requirements.
