Carpentry
The Carpentry Program at SWBOCES, part of a cluster of construction-related courses, offers students a chance to spend two years learning job-specific skills. The curriculum includes lessons on shop behavior and safety, identification of hand and power tools, taking measurements and reading plans, and the construction and completion of projects such as cabinets. In the program's second year, students learn to build a blanket chest, construct a frame house, and stain their carpentry projects.
Note-taking, journal writing and quizzes are an integral part of the curriculum, which integrates the New York State Education Department’s English Language Arts standards. In the spring of the first-year program, students write resumes and participate in simulated job interviews to sharpen their verbal skills.
