Automotive Technician

In this course, students receive hands-on experience and theoretical training in foreign and domestic car repair in the SWBOCES garage/classroom. The first three months of the program are devoted to basic electrical system theory and repair. Students learn about battery parts, charging systems, heating and air conditioning systems, and lighting and wiring. Vehicle inspections are routinely conducted in class, giving students the opportunity to check the main components of a vehicle, including oil, steering and suspension systems, tires and safety features. A detailed study of engines is provided, which includes information on the basic components of engines, engine classifications, and engine size and measurement. Tire and wheel theory is also discussed, as are brake, steering, cooling and fuel systems, in addition to suspension fundamentals. Toward the end of the program, students are asked to complete an engine performance diagnosis, paying particular attention to ignition system fundamentals and emission requirements.

New York State English Language Arts standards are integrated throughout the course, as students enhance their written skills through note-taking, question-and-answer assignments, resume and cover letter writing, and reading for information. Student performance is measured through weekly tests and frequent lab assignments. The SWBOCES Automotive Technology Program has a partnership with local automotive dealers and manufacturers such as General Motors, Chrysler and Toyota, made possible through its participation in AYES (the Automotive Youth Education System). Benefits include college incentives, paid summer internships and a Snap-On tool kit incentive for students who complete the program.
