Career Services Honors Class of 2006

BOCES Career Services graduation 2006

Family members and friends packed the Westchester County Center on June 15 to honor some 300 students at the Southern Westchester BOCES Center for Career Services annual Recognition Ceremony.

The ceremony honored graduating seniors who have attended the SWBOCES Career Services Secondary Day, Basic Occupational Education, and Alternative High School/ GED programs. The event also featured the presentation of BOCES memorial awards and scholarships, outstanding student awards in areas of study, and overall outstanding student awards.

Natalee Taub of Byram Hills High School, a cosmetology student, reminded classmates that because of their training in BOCES programs, "we begin our lifelong career path with a firm foundation."

Ms. Taub, one of 65 BOCES graduates eligible to receive a technical endorsement on her diploma, urged her fellow graduates to "always be proud, be happy, be successful."

SWBOCES District Superintendent Ronald L. Smalls, in his keynote address, told the graduates that "tonight is the end of one chapter in your book of life, but it's also the beginning of a new one."

"The world is full of opportunities and challenges," said Mr. Smalls. "And the world needs both dreamers and workers. You can be both."

Winning the overall Outstanding Student Award in the Secondary Day Program was Alison A. Alfano , a cosmetology student from White Plains High School. Jorge Camacho of Sleepy Hollow High School, a student in the Auto Body program, was named Outstanding Student in the Basic Occupational Education Program.

Memorial Awards, named in honor of staff members who dedicated their lives to BOCES students, were:

Donald B. Barbierri Memorial Award

Recognizes a student who demonstrated competency in a vocational program, growth and an outstanding attitude:

Kevin Krautle, TV/Video Production

Westlake High School

The Depaul Stallkamp Memorial Award

Presented to the student in the Basic Occupational Education Program who has demonstrated the greatest improvement during the school year.

Ashley Coe, Work Study/ Food Trades

Valhalla High School

The John Harley Memorial Award

Presented to the most improved student in the Secondary Day Program.

Jason Bikofsky, Commercial Arts

Valhalla High School

The John Remling Memorial Award

Presented to the student with an outstanding attitude toward the world of work and who has demonstrated proficiency in the trade area.

Dante Giannini, Culinary Arts

Eastchester High School

The Ray Oddo Memorial Award

This award is in memory of a teacher who gave 32 years to the Special Education students at Southern Westchester BOCES.   This award goes to a special education student who "has come to believe in himself/herself to realize he/she can accomplish."

Charles Hunt, Auto Body

Dobbs Ferry High School  


Awards and graduation certificates were handed out by Mr. Smalls; Linda Suarez, Director of the Center for Career Services; Colleen Murray, Supervisor of the Basic Occupational Education Program; Clement Ceccarelli, Supervisor of the Secondary Day Program; Eileen Bloom, Supervisor of the Alternative High School/GED Program; and Jeffrey Hansen, SWBOCES Deputy District Superintendent. SWBOCES Board of Education President Evelyn Stock also was presented with a plaque from Career Services for her 14 years of service on the BOCES Board. Mrs. Stock retired at the end of June.
