Ornamental Horticulture

Curriculum The SWBOCES Horticulture Program includes a working floral design studio and a student-run floral gift shop at Westchester Meadows, an assisted-living residential development located next door to the SWBOCES campus. Often planned around the holidays, the horticulture curriculum introduces students to the concepts of floral design and then provides them with the hands-on experience they will need to pursue careers in the field.

Students in the program develop a variety of skills, including:

  • caring for fresh flowers and houseplants
  • using silk and dried flowers in arrangements
  • proper use of floral design tools and equipment
  • arranging fresh, silk and dried flowers

At Westchester Meadows, our students develop sales experience and customer service skills, preparing them to enter the workforce as florists, sales help, delivery help, or consultants in floral design.
