Alternative Education

The Alternative Education Program offered by Southern Westchester BOCES provides full-day instruction for non-classified students in more intimate classroom settings with a nurturing staff that sets high standards. This program was recently cited as one of the Top 5 Alternative Schools in New York State. Our options include the Alternative High School, where students can earn a High School Diploma, and the General Educational Development (GED) program, designed for students at a substantial risk of not completing the requirements for graduation.

Both programs are located at our Center for Career Services in Valhalla, and include the Center's well-known career and technical components that provide students with marketable workplace skills. The Program also emphasizes service learning, in which students perform acts of community service that integrate academic skills.

OUR STAFF

Our academic staff includes teachers in the four major subject areas - English, Social Studies, Science and Math. These programs are supported by a guidance counselor, part-time social worker, school monitor and principal. We focus on developing our students' sense of belonging through a variety of activities, a team-like approach and planned special events designed to help them feel accepted in school and empowered to make positive contributions.

Financial aid and college workshops are held to assist students in making decisions about their college and post-secondary plans.
