The General Educational Development Program

Our full-day GED program allows non-classified students to prepare for the more challenging GED 2002 series and participate in a career and technical class to prepare for the workforce. A one-year program is available for High School seniors, and a two-year program is available for juniors, depending on the year the student entered 9th grade.

Courses

Coursework in the GED Program includes instruction in Science, Social Studies, Math, and Language Arts (both Reading and Writing). An essay is also required for passing the GED exam. Our teaching staff works with the student’s local High School to determine if GED placement is appropriate, and to select the best career and technical program for the student. All eligible students are supported in their efforts to pass the GED exam.

What is the GED Exam?

The General Educational Development (GED) Testing Service develops and distributes the GED, a test developed as an alternative to other standardized tests required for High School graduation. More than 860,000 people worldwide take the GED Tests each year, and one out of every seven high school diplomas issued each year in the U.S. is based on passing the GED Tests. The GED Tests measure knowledge in five different areas: language arts/writing, social studies, science, language arts/reading, and mathematics. An important feature of the GED Tests is an essay that documents your ability to write and communicate effectively.

The test is taken in the spring of senior year. In order to be referred to the test, students must first pass the official GED practice test and score high enough for referral. Our students take the practice test here at Southern Westchester BOCES, and the official GED is administered at other sites. All the required forms for signing up for the GED exam are prepared by our staff on behalf of our students.
