School district officials and others responsible for developing safety and emergency response plans will attend a Threat Assessment Team Workshop Monday, April 16, at Southern Westchester BOCES training center in Harrison.
This workshop will cover a multitude of questions. What do we really mean by threat assessment? How is a threat assessment conducted? Will I be prepared?
Hosted by Sgt. Amery Bernhardt of the Westchester County Department of Public Safety and SWBOCES Supervisor of Safety and Facilities Brandon Cruz, this event will present a practical toolkit for assembling a Threat Assessment team.
The workshop is already at maximum enrollment, with 65 participants registered. Future such workshops are already in discussion to accommodate demand.
Participants will receive guidance on how to assess threats as a team while also focusing on the importance of communication among schools, students, faculty, and law enforcement. Practical scenarios throughout the program will help participants attain crucial threat assessment skills.
In many cases information about a threat has been made known prior to it even happening, said Cruz, who coordinates professional development programs for SWBOCES centers and component districts.
“We want to help people start making the connections beforehand,” he said. “Here at Southern Westchester BOCES we are being proactive on this rising issue.”
